be more sustainable

It's no good to rest on our laurels - particularly with 4 whole years now under our belts!

While the aim at the launch of Falling Leaf was to do everything to the best possible standards from the off, there's always room for improvement. A lot has changed over the past four years, and for us, 2025 was all about getting better.

We're always working hard to be more sustainable. Got ideas for how we could improve even further? Get in touch!

In the meantime, read on for what we've tackled so far...

Waste-Saving Tags

A garment tag made of seed paper, in soil, showing it germinating with seedlings.

THEN...

As you may know, we use seed paper for our garment tags, so once you're finished with it you can grow flowers. The tags are:

  • made from recycled cotton waste that degrades naturally in the soil

  • packed full of seeds for flowers that bees and other pollinators love

  • handmade using traditional methods for maximum germination

NOW...

We now use our supplier's "imperfect" stock - sheets that have some imperfection, whether it is a waviness, creasing, or a different texture or thickness, saving these sheets from going to waste.

  • More cost effective, and more environmentally friendly - this one's a win-win!

More Sustainable Bags

Black mailing bags with white writing saying "I'm 100% eco friendly" on the front and "worms love me" on the back

THEN...

From day one we refused to send out our online orders in plastic bags, so we sourced some compostable mailing bags made from plant starch. Unfortunately they were only available on Amazon...not our first choice, but back then it was the only one.

NOW...

We now get our mailing bags from SimpleLifeCo, a carbon neutral BCorp based in Wales, founded by Beth and Dino, who are on a mission to create packaging with a purpose.

We love that they hold the same importance to the planet and its people as to turning a profit, from funding the planting of trees across the world to supporting their local charities and community.

While they cost more than our original mailers, they're:

  • supporting a small business in the UK,

  • they've got tons more environmental credentials, and

  • they come in our brand colours of black and orange - we think they look WAY better than our previous grey ones!

Better Beanies

Olive green beanie with a waffle texture, on some autumn leaves, with an embroidered orange leaf and the text "Falling Leaf Clothing" embroidered around it

THEN...

Our ever-popular 100% organic cotton beanies have been with us since day one - we love the colours, the feel of the material, and the plastic-free embroidery on them.

They've been dropped in puddles, the dog has played tug-of-war with them...they've had a tough life. The recommended sponge cleaning wasn't enough for everything we were putting them through, and they didn't handle getting fully wet particularly well.

NOW...

We've found beanies with equally great colours and credentials, and importantly they can now handle being washed! We've got two textures:

  1. a lovely stretchy waffle effect with a satisfying squish in our green or mustard colours

  2. a smoother, lightly ribbed, super stretchy beanie in anthracite grey or rich burgundy.

They may cost us a little more, but we know you'll appreciate the effort!

Cleaner Comms

It's not just product-related improvements we've made. After about 20 years with O2, we made the switch to "the world's greenest mobile network" - a bold statement indeed, but since Ecotalk uses ALL of their profits to support the Green Britain Foundation's projects to restore and rewild natural habitats around the UK, they can back it up!

Postage Upgrade

While it costs us a little more, for your peace of mind (and ours!) we now send out all online orders via Tracked 24 or Tracked 48 services, depending which shipping option you've selected - unless we can hand deliver!

This means you can see exactly when your parcel has been dispatched and when it's due to arrive, and, since we're sending via Royal Mail, you know that we're using the UK's greenest parcel delivery service, based on their average of just 165gCO2e carbon emissions per parcel.

Sharing the love

A woman (Falling Leaf founder Lindsay) smiling, leaning with her arms folded against a gate into a field, with a sign saying Emiel's Food Forest on it.

In 2025 we started looking at how we could give back to the community, connect with like-minded groups, and start supporting the change we were hoping to see in the world.

To that end we donated each month to various charities close to our heart for every social post we made, and most significantly we partnered with community interest company Earthself in the creation and maintenance of Emiel's Food Forest on the shores of Loch Rannoch.

We're delighted to be part of such an inspiring project, and look forward to seeing it grow.

There are loads of other ways in which we're improving every day, from the introduction of our new corduroy textured caps, to our natural, unbleached and undyed Hermitage tees and Hermitage sweatshirts, to even upgrading how we set ourselves up at markets, using second hand display crates nabbed from an egg company that was moving on to pastures new.

If you can think of any other ways in which you'd like to see Falling Leaf grow and improve in 2026, whether to be more sustainable, offer better gear or introduce new products, please do get in touch - there's no idea too big, too small or too weird! :)

Thanks for reading :)
