A view of the colourful buildings on the harbour front in Tobermory - pale blue, pink, teal, black, red, yellow and bright blue building fronts, calm water, and leafy trees surrounding.

For our second day on the isle, we decided to head east, to arguably the busier side of the island, with a few more touristic points of interest along the way.

👕I sharpened up my look for the day with a pale blue shirt over my current favourite of the FLC t-shirts - the charcoal grey Rannoch Moor - with a pair of soft grey skinny jeans and chunky black boots.

Tobermory Town

First stop, Tobermory Distillery, where it turned out we'd picked the ideal day for a visit, as they were having the island's first whisky festival.

We got a quick tour of the 228-year-old distillery (great my 16YO nephew could join for this part), then were given minis of their two core expressions (none for the nephew!) to take away.

A wee bit underwhelmed by the festival (it was maybe still a bit early at 11am), we hit the nearby farmers' market for some snacks and local honey, a random Himalayan craft fair in the town hall, and had a quick spin around the Mull Museum before setting off south for the ferry to drop off my nephew for his homeward journey, but not before we'd fed him - yet again - at Blethers Cafe in Craignure.

Dad showed his proficiency in some epic stone skimming - next stop the World Champs!

Castles

A few miles further south took Dad and I to the spectacularly situated Duart Castle, home of Clan MacLean. You'll see it from the ferry if you come from Oban (and the weather's kind!).

It's got a bunch of lovely walks around the peninsula where you can both stretch the legs and get some great views of the castle from different angles.

We weren't yet in need of visiting their cafe, and still had plenty of daylight, so we pushed further south, winding our way down to a lovely bay on the southern coast (narrowly missing a MASSIVE deer on route) to a wee lonely tower grandly called Moy Castle, another seat of the Macleans.

A dark stone castle on a pebble beach surrounded by green leafy trees, with a tall hill in the background.

Our stomachs started to rumble at this point so we set off back northward, finding many of the places we'd thought we'd like to stop in for dinner closed. Parking up in Salen to make a plan, we called the Glenforsa Hotel, who were delighted to welcome the two of us plus our four-legged friend.

I wish I'd taken more photos of the place - it's a huge wooden lodge set in woodlands with more rental lodges surrounding it, right next to an airfield with views across the water. The service was also super friendly.

While Dad plumped for the curry, I had the most delicious Thai curried mussels I've ever tasted while we watched the sun lower on the horizon across the air strip.

Zero space for dessert, we headed back to Dervaig for an early night.

A Cessna T206H Turbo Stationair lightweight aircraft sitting on a grassy airstrip in front of another aircraft, with a lake in the background and hills even further in the background, in the late evening sun.

And that was it for Travel Diaries Day 2 on Mull!

Travel Diaries: Tips for Mull

Some more useful details if you're planning your own trip:

  • Tobermory does get busy - parking on the street gets a bit spicy - but there's a big car park in front of the distillery.

  • The Mull Museum is free to enter, but they do appreciate a donation.

  • Things to do in Craignure are fairly limited so don't get there too early for your ferry!

  • The final bit of the road to Moy Castle is either a) unclear (if we went the wrong way) or b) very rough.

  • We recommend booking where to eat in advance each night just to make sure they're open and have space for you (plus dog if that's a consideration for you too).

  • Much of the wildlife/farmlife is very stubborn, with a huge lack of respect for road safety:

A sheep standing in the middle of the road looking at you, with a small cemetery with a huge tree behind it.
