Travel Diaries - Isle of Mull Day 3

I had a couple of hours to play with before the ferry home, and I certainly made the most of them! Churches, beaches, standing stones...day 3 had it all.


👕With the sun peeping out, and knowing I was headed to the beach at some point, I opted for the sandy colours of the Hermitage t-shirt, Natural shorts and Sand cap for my last 'fit of the trip.


A last look at Dervaig

I popped uphill for a final vista out over my great(x5)-grandpa's village, to check out the wee graveyard for signs of the Galloways (none found), and then a bit further up to find the Kilmore standing stones - a really peaceful spot on a sunny day.


On the way back down I stopped in at Kilmore Church, notable for:


  1. its round, white, pencil-shaped tower - a handy landmark identifiable for miles around, and

  2. its 'controversial' stained glass window depicting an intimate scene of Jesus with one of two apparently pregnant Marys - either Mary of Bethany or Mary Magdalene (or was she one and the same?!). This image was used in promotions of the film Bloodline, a documentary inspired by the theories presented in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code

Beaches


I'm slightly embarrassed to admit how long it took me to realise the sheer number of white sandy beaches with turquoise waters that Scotland boasts.


Having heard from a friend that Port Na Ba (or 'Beach of the Cattle') on the north coast of the island was well worth a trip, and with an hour until I needed to set off for the ferry, I got as close as I could in the van, then set off on my bike.

Only a 10-minute or so ride north west from Croig, the beach didn't disappoint, with glorious colours, soft sand, and loads of little seabirds busying themselves at the water's edge.


With a lodge and a campervan overlooking me, plus a yacht heading straight for the beach, I felt a bit too visible to pop in for a swim, so I headed back to another - possibly even more stunning - cove a little further south east (name unknown) for a quick dip in the lovely warm(ish) waters, with just the local sheep for spectators.


In the process, I also managed to get a shot of a seal posing on some rocks just offshore.



By this point time was getting tight, so me and my soggy undies headed back to the van, and south to Craignure to catch the ferry home with Dad.


And that was it for Travel Diaries Day 3 on Mull!


Travel Diaries: Tips for Mull


Some more useful details if you're planning your own trip:


  • There are a good few shipwrecks to check out around the island if, like me, you're into that sort of thing.

  • The road south of Loch Na Keal (the B8035) has been closed at Gribun Cliffs for a while now due to fallen rocks on the road (and I suppose the risk of more) - it means a loop of the centre of Mull isn't currently possible, and you'll have a long drive if you want to get back to Salen from, say, Balmeanach. Google Maps is your friend!

  • Make sure you get out on deck for the ferry to/from the island, and bring your camera - there are so many cool things to check out on route.

  • I think we've just scratched the surface, so stay tuned for further trips!
